CO₂ EOR Screening Checklist: Miscibility, Sources and Surface Constraints

CO₂ EOR is as much a logistics decision as a reservoir decision. Both belong in the screening table.

CO₂ EOR screening is dominated by two questions: can we achieve miscibility at reservoir pressure, and can we get enough CO₂ to the field at acceptable cost? Both belong in the screen from day one.

Reservoir-side checklist

  • Depth and pressure sufficient to exceed MMP at planned injection.
  • Oil composition — intermediate hydrocarbons favor lower MMP.
  • Temperature, reservoir heterogeneity, and gravity-override risk.
  • Existing wells and completions capable of CO₂ service.

Surface-side checklist

  • CO₂ source: natural, industrial capture, CCUS supply contract.
  • Pipeline distance and pressure spec.
  • Recycle compression and dehydration capex.
  • HSE plan for high-pressure CO₂.

Treat the surface chain as a first-class screen, not an afterthought — and reach for the EOR screening software to rank CO₂ against polymer, thermal and waterflood optimization in the same evaluation.
